One Sun, One World.
OASES was approached by WWF and asked whether County Durham would like to organise performing their new musical One Sun One World which was commissioned as part of their 50th anniversary celebrations. This sounded exciting so the Durham Music Service (DMS) were contacted to scope out the possibilities. DMS were excited about the challenging nature of the music and performance and OASES were keen to develop the use of the creative arts as a stimulus for engaging in sustainability education.
Two leading music schools were approached, Durham Johnston School and St Leonard’s Catholic School both in Durham City. This led to working with 12 of their partner primary schools to work on the project over the Spring 2012 term leading to performances on the evenings of 28th and 29th March in each secondary school.
Each school received support from a music teacher from DMS (Hilary Ions and Wendy Hughes) who worked with either the school choir or class groups over the Spring term. Staff from OASES supported each school using the songs and their lyrics to help the pupils learn about the sustainability issues raised through the songs. Each pupil then also produced a T shirt to wear for the performances. These were produced as sustainably as possible. The T shirts were made from fairtrade cotton and they were decorated using waste fabric donated from Ikea in Gateshead. The pupils also enjoyed fairtrade juice and bars during the interval of each performance.
340 young people from the choirs and orchestras of twelve primary and two secondary schools sung and played their hearts out to capacity audiences at the two schools. One Sun One World musical production has created stimulating experiences for the students who had the opportunity of performing with an orchestra made up from the secondary schools and musicians from Durham Music Service.
