Supergrid – Wind Turbine STEM Activity

Supergrid is a wind energy activity that can take place over a whole day or as two half day sessions. OASES holds the agreement to run the activity in the North East region. It is particularly good for Key Stage 3 students but can also be used by upper Key Stage 2 as well as Key Stage 4 & 5 students. It is also a very effective transition activity with mixed teams.

Sessions include the following:

Background to the sources and use of energy in the UK and Europe

Working in teams of up to 5 students, each group:

  • Tests different blades to ensure maximum power output
  • Designs and builds efficient and secure towers for the turbine
  • Tests the units
  • Competes against the other teams (representing a European country) through the bespoke software package.
