Active Maths at Hamsterley Forest
Farringdon Community College used OASES to help with the Year 6 transition by delivering a day of guided walks and den building at Hamsterley Forest. Teachers were keen that the pupils should get the opportunity to get to know each other, build their confidence, engage in teamwork and apply practical maths skills.
Four groups per day took part. The pupils were split into teams and took it in turns to go on a guided walk through the woods and then create ’dens’ from natural woodland materials. The groups were challenged to build a structure that could hold and shelter the whole team. Participants were asked to collect and judge the size and types of sticks and materials to use by carrying out trial and error tests. Once housed in their large group shelter their ‘grand creation’ was tested by an OASES member of staff who administered rain shower.
