Illuminating Waste

OASES worked with the Derwent Valley AAP and Durham County Council to create the Illuminating Waste project. Seven Consett shop windows were lit up for one week with recycled artwork made by local schoolchildren. The schools each had an environmental theme for their display, which were as follows:
Leadgate Primary School – Endangered Animals - Well Pharmacy
St. Pius X Primary School – Reduce Reuse Recycle - Jula Crafts
Ebchester Primary School – Climate Change - Consett Library
Villa Real Primary – Deforestation- Heavenly Interiors
Consett Junior School- Rainforests- Mark Wilkinson Photography
Consett Junior School – Pollution - Empire Theatre and Cinema
St Patrick’s RCVA Primary, Consett – Pollination – Sadie the Bra Lady

Through two OASES lead workshops, the pupils learnt about the importance of recycling and waste management, and then designed and created the sculptures.

The Illuminating Waste ‘Switch On’ event occurred on the 22nd October 2015.  The evening was kicked off with an impressive set of tunes from Consett Juniors Brass Band. Runaway Samba drumming from Jack Drum Arts then lead the crowd around each window in turn as the pupils from each school had the opportunity to turn on their own display’s lights.

“It’s full of wonderful recyclable items”- Event attendee.
